Job application closing dates: how to handle deadlines and late applications

What a closing date means in practice

A closing date tells you when applications are expected to close. It does not mean nobody will be interviewed before then, and how strictly it is kept depends on the kind of employer.

In the public sector the date tends to be firmer. Every listing on jobs.govt.nz, the government's jobs site, showed a closing date when we checked in September 2026, and agencies often shortlist after it passes, so an application after it may not be read at all. Private employers vary. On Seek, an ad stays live for 30 days unless the employer takes it down earlier, and a closing date appears only if the employer chooses to list one. Many private employers and recruiters read applications as they arrive and move quickly on a strong candidate. No law sets closing dates for job ads, so each employer decides how to run its own.

Applying late, and when it works

If you find a role after its closing date, it can still be worth a try, particularly with a private employer or a recruiter. Do it properly:

• Check the ad is still live. If it is, the application channel may still work, and on Seek applications to a live ad are still sent to the employer.
• Ask before sending. A short email or call to the contact person, asking whether they are still accepting applications, is better than sending one unannounced.
• Be brief about why. Say you have only just seen the role. There is no need for a long explanation.
• Make it strong. A late application needs to stand out, so tailor it as carefully as any other.

If the answer is no, thank them and ask to be considered for similar roles. It costs nothing and it puts your name in front of the right person.

Rolling recruitment and "applications reviewed as received"

Some ads say applications will be reviewed as they are received, or that the role may close early. Take that at face value. The employer is telling you it will interview strong candidates straight away and may stop once it finds the right one.

For those roles, speed matters more than usual. Apply within a few days of the ad appearing, while you can still give the application proper care. An ad with no closing date at all is similar: assume it could close at any time, and do not leave it for the end of the month.

Never missing one: deadlines in your calendar

Check the closing time as well as the date, where the ad gives one, because a role can close at 5pm rather than midnight. Most missed deadlines are not decisions. They are ads saved on a Monday and remembered the following week. The fix is to record the closing date the moment you save a job, and to see it again a few days before it arrives.

Timing your best applications early in the window

Because many employers read applications as they arrive, applying early gives you a better chance of being read with fresh eyes, before a shortlist forms. It also leaves time to follow up, or to ask a question, while the role is still open.

A practical rhythm is to decide within two or three days of seeing an ad whether it is worth a tailored application, then send it within the first week or so. Keep the last few days before any closing date as a buffer, not the plan. If two good roles close in the same week, do the one that closes first, and the one where your fit is strongest, before the rest.
