Remote jobs in New Zealand: finding roles that are genuinely remote

Remote, hybrid and "remote-ish"

Three kinds of role often sit under the same word:

• Fully remote: you can work from anywhere in New Zealand, with occasional travel for team days at most.
• Hybrid: a set number of office days each week or fortnight, with the rest from home.
• "Remote-ish": advertised as remote or flexible, but you must live within reach of one office, or the arrangement is at the manager's discretion.

The difference matters most if you live outside the main centres. A role that is remote only within Auckland is not a remote role for someone in Invercargill. Before you apply, look for the answers to three questions in the ad, or ask them: how many office days are expected, where the office is, and whether the arrangement is written into the employment agreement or simply current practice.

Where genuinely remote New Zealand roles are listed

The main job boards all let you narrow a search by work arrangement. Seek, LinkedIn and Indeed each have a filter for remote or work-from-home roles, and it is worth setting a saved search with alerts so new remote roles come to you.

A few other places are worth checking:

• Company careers pages, especially technology, software and online businesses, which often say whether they hire across New Zealand.
• Your network, because remote roles are sometimes filled through referrals before they reach a board.
• Employers you already know work remotely, even if they have nothing advertised now.

Read each ad closely. The word "remote" in the title does not always match the detail further down, and the office-day expectation is often mentioned only near the end.

Some remote roles come from overseas employers. Check carefully whether the offer is employment or a contract. As a contractor you are responsible for your own tax, ACC levies and KiwiSaver, and you get no paid leave, so the rate needs to be higher to match a salary. Time zones matter too: a role run on another country's hours can mean early mornings or late nights here.

Work-from-home scams and the losses involved

Remote job hunting is exactly where scammers operate. Netsafe's figures, as checked in August 2026, put employment scams at about 28% of all New Zealand scam losses, and work-from-home scams averaged over $13,000 per victim in June 2026.

The warning signs are consistent:

• An offer after a chat on a messaging app, with no proper interview.
• Pay that is far above what the task would normally earn.
• Any request for money up front: training, equipment, a "deposit" or a cryptocurrency transfer.
• Tasks such as rating products or "boosting" apps, paid only once you have paid in.
• Pressure to decide quickly, and reluctance to put anything in writing.

Valuing no commute in dollars

A remote role can be worth more than a higher-paying office job once the commute is counted. Driving 25km each way, five days a week for 46 working weeks, is 11,500km a year. Inland Revenue sets kilometre rates for business travel, and they make a fair benchmark for a personal commute. At its running-cost rate for a petrol car, 37c a kilometre, that is about $4,255 a year, or $13,800 at its full-cost rate of $1.20 a kilometre, which includes the fixed costs of owning the car. Both are before parking and before the hours spent driving.

Filtering your board by location

When you save roles, record the work arrangement and the office location with each one. It makes a shortlist of remote roles quick to see, and it stops a "remote-ish" role slipping through as a fully remote one.
