How the working days are counted

The calculator goes through every day of the year, counts the days of the week you work, and takes off the public holidays that fall on them. Section 44 of the Holidays Act 2003 lists 12 public holidays a year: New Year's Day and 2 January, Waitangi Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, the King's Birthday, Matariki, Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and your province's anniversary day. For Monday to Friday in 2027, 261 weekdays less 11 national holidays leaves 250, and 249 once an anniversary day comes off. A holiday on a day you do not work does not reduce your count, and two holidays on one day count as one (section 44(4)).

Weekend holidays and your working week

In 2027, five holidays fall on a weekend: 2 January, Waitangi Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day on a Saturday or Sunday, and Anzac Day on a Sunday. Sections 45 and 45A keep a weekend holiday on the weekend day for anyone who would otherwise work it, and move it to the following Monday for everyone else, or to the following Tuesday when Christmas Day, Boxing Day, 1 January or 2 January falls on a Sunday. So the count depends on your days: if you work Saturdays, Christmas Day 2027 is Saturday 25 December for you, not Monday 27 December. The calculator applies the rule to the days you tick. If your days vary, the otherwise working day test decides which day is yours.

Anniversary days

Each anniversary day belongs to one of the old provinces, not today's regions, and is set by local custom, usually on the nearest Monday. Employment New Zealand lists the exceptions: Taranaki moves to the second Monday in March, Hawke's Bay to the Friday before Labour Day, Marlborough to the first Monday after Labour Day, most of Canterbury keeps Christchurch Show Day in November, South Canterbury keeps the fourth Monday in September, and Southland usually takes Easter Tuesday. Otago has no single day, so check your agreement. Employment New Zealand notes its anniversary dates may contain errors and suggests checking with your local council.

Working hours, and leave

Working hours are the working days times your hours on a working day. After 12 months with an employer you are entitled to at least 4 weeks of paid annual holidays a year (section 16), which the calculator takes off as 4 of your working weeks; a public holiday inside your leave stays a public holiday and is not counted as leave (section 40). Our article on making annual leave go further picks the days to book around the holidays, and how many hours is full time covers what a working week means.
