How to turn hours and minutes into decimal hours
An hour has 60 minutes, so divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. 15 minutes is 0.25 of an hour, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. To go back, multiply the part after the decimal point by 60: 0.4 hours is 24 minutes. The trap is reading a decimal as minutes. 8.20 hours is not 8 hours 20 minutes: it is 8 hours 12 minutes, because 0.2 of an hour is 12 minutes. If a timesheet asks for decimal hours, never type the minutes after the point. The converter warns you when a decimal you type looks like a time written with a point.
Rounding to two places, and what it costs
Most timesheets and payslips round decimal hours to two places. Every multiple of 3 minutes converts exactly, but the rest do not: 20 minutes is 0.3333 hours, shown as 0.33. At $28.50 an hour, 8 hours 20 minutes is $237.50 exactly, but $237.41 on 8.33 hours, 9 cents short. A few cents a shift is small, but rounding should not run against you every time. Every hour you work must be paid at least the minimum wage, $23.95 an hour for adults from 1 April 2026, and our article on whether an employer can round your hours covers what is allowed when start and finish times are rounded.
Why payroll asks for decimal hours
Pay is hours times an hourly rate, so payroll works in decimal hours. Section 130 of the Employment Relations Act 2000 requires every employer to keep a wages and time record showing the number of hours worked each day in a pay period and the pay for those hours, and Employment New Zealand says it must be kept for 6 years, even after you leave. For a whole week of start and finish times, the weekly timesheet calculator adds them up, and our article on getting timesheets into payroll covers what a payroll file needs.

Questions
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 plus 45 divided by 60, which is 7.75 hours.
What is 7 hours 30 minutes in decimal?
7.5 hours. 30 minutes is half an hour, so 7:30 is 7.5 hours, never 7.30.
Is 8.20 hours the same as 8 hours 20 minutes?
No. 8.20 hours is 8 hours 12 minutes, because 0.2 of an hour is 12 minutes. 8 hours 20 minutes is 8.33 hours to two places.
How do I turn decimal hours back into minutes?
Multiply the part after the point by 60. 6.4 hours is 6 hours and 0.4 times 60 minutes, which is 24 minutes, so 6 hours 24 minutes.
Does rounding to two decimal places change my pay?
Slightly. Only multiples of 3 minutes convert exactly, so 8 hours 20 minutes paid on 8.33 hours is a few cents less than the exact time. The converter shows the difference at your rate.
What happens when I save the hours?
Your account adds them to Your Timesheets as one day's hours on the date you chose, after asking, with the place you work and its hourly rate if you gave one. Logging hours is free on every plan, and every change is kept.
